When it comes to data management and data safety, organisations face the choice of two different endpoint management systems: cloud-based, or on-premises. Both options have positives and negatives, so which works best for your company? AC3’s Digital Workplace Lead, Achala Mataraaratchi talks about what the difference is, and which is the best option.

Cloud-based management solution

Endpoint management systems being in the cloud is the most widely used and the most practical for the majority of small to medium businesses that aren’t dealing with highly sensitive material. Accessible from anywhere at anytime, the cloud-based solution is both cost effective and allows for remote access. It can be deployed quickly and scaled to suit a growing business. Adding more users and more data into the cloud is user friendly and immediate.

However, the possible downfall comes in the security measures because since it isn’t physical data, it can be easier to access. Data hacks dominated the news cycle in 2022, resulting in the public becoming hesitant in where they should store their data and who has access to it. However, with more breaches comes more security, and cloud-based solutions are increasing safety measures to secure their data.

Cloud-based solutions are accessible and agile. As more businesses adopt flexible working, access to drives through the Internet can mean that people are always connected. Although on-premises can seem like the most secure solution, the cost benefit for cloud-based solutions can swing the pendulum hugely in its favour.

On-premise management solution

On-premises allows businesses to have complete control over the security of the data. However, it can be a costly management solution. With on– premises systems, there isn’t the reliance on internet connectivity, but it usually requires a large upfront purchase. On-premises takes up physical space. It’s top security, and the data is held literally under lock and key.

When looking at organisations that require an on-premises solution, it would be reserved for highly sensitive information. From the FBI to banks and government agencies with highly restricted data, these are the organisations that should be turning to on-premises.

In today’s world, there are many factors that determine what sort of endpoint management system would be best suited. But, for the majority, it’s no surprise that cloud computing has grown exponentially in popularity. The solution provides agility and scalability. Although data breaches have dominated headlines, the risk versus reward for cloud is decreasing, with the risk minimising and there being more reward in the cost and time efficient solution.

There is no uniform solution for every business. It’s about finding the right one for each specific need. The one thing that is certain; regardless of industry or business size, data security should be a priority for everyone.
