2020 was a year that saw so many organisations sit in a holding pattern. For most organisations, the top focus was just to keep the lights on and not take unnecessary risks. Most of my customers opted to not push any further into the unknown than where we had already found ourselves! Many projects were placed on hold or cancelled entirely.
Candidates/employees (humans!) were also stuck in a holding pattern. Many people I am working with tell me that they sat in roles through 2020, that they weren’t entirely happy with. They felt extremely lucky to have a job and weren’t brave enough to rock the boat and see what was outside their current workplace.
Now it is 2021 and we are hurtling towards the end of financial year. Consumer confidence has improved in many sectors. Businesses have IT budgets that haven’t been utilised and we are all rushing to complete initiatives that no one was quite ready to approach last year.
And as we approach the end of the financial year, we have found ourselves in a completely different predicament. Many are now facing a lack of the right resources to deliver our IT and business outcomes. Maybe we don’t have the specific technical skill set required to ensure customer needs are met. Or perhaps we don’t have the strength in numbers we need to be able to work through that “to do” list we have for year end. Or maybe, we have struggled to backfill those vacancies after our highly skilled workforce got the confidence to move roles, with 2020 firmly behind us.
It was already difficult to find the right skillset in the IT market pre-covid. The amount of highly skilled resources was small. When we add in so much movement through 2020, combined with the lack of international arrivals, the effect has been big. So how can you find someone with the right technical skills, who fits seamlessly into your culture and deliver your projects prior to the end of financial year? One option many of my customers are taking advantage of is contingent workforces.
Utilising contractors to deliver key projects and initiatives, or to ensure customer needs are consistently met, is a quick and efficient way to do that.
