"Hi, my name is Greg Cockburn, and I am the Head of Hyperscale Cloud at AC3.

The Cost Optimisation pillar of the AWS Well-Architected Framework focuses on avoiding unnecessary costs.

Key topics include: understanding spending over time and controlling fund allocation, selecting resources of the type and quantity, and scaling to meet business needs without overspending.

In this pillar, organisations should implement cloud financial management, adopt a consumption model, measure overall efficiency, stop spending money on undifferentiated heavy lifting, and analyse and attribute expenditure.

The common gaps we see when performing reviews include, obfuscating financial data from teams and not making application teams accountable for their costs on a continuous basis, instead, reacting once the bill arrives at the CFO’s desk.

My quick tip for you is to empower your teams with financial data and have an understanding of the cost per transaction, and hold teams accountable for their spend, across production and non-production environments alike.
