Hear from Dan Marsh, Head of ServiceNow, as he discusses career pathways and progression in ServiceNow.
"Hi, everybody. I'm Dan, and I lead up the ServiceNow practice of AC3.
I'm here today to talk about getting into ServiceNow or the ServiceNow platform as a career.
And there are so many different pathways and there's so many different skill sets that can complement the use of ServiceNow within an organisation and that are imperative to driving the evolution of the ServiceNow platform.
Within the ServiceNow practice at AC3, we have a very broad array of skills that help us to deliver for our customers.
We have solution architects, engineers, solution consultants, ServiceNow administrators, business analysts, test analysts, test leads.
There are so many different avenues due to the breadth of the platform. And also, we're operating in a capability that promotes incremental application development.
So, if you're looking to start your career in ServiceNow, the first step for me would be to understand what are you passionate about.
Do you want to be a developer or an engineer? Do you want to be an architect? Do you want to be a tester? Or do you really want to take the customer on the journey to understand the requirements as a business analyst.
There are so many different avenues and really it comes down to what you're passionate about as an individual
To complement getting into a ServiceNow career, there are so many different avenues that I've seen employees that I've managed, but also different peers in organisations get into.
There's so many paths to get there and there are also a lot of different programs that ServiceNow offer in terms of the NextGen program.
They've got agreements with TAFE NSW as well. And different providers to help get new recruits into the market and into the ServiceNow ecosystem.
AC3 do this really well, in terms of promoting from within. We've got some really great case studies and success stories of staff within our organisation starting on the service desk and then moving into ServiceNow.
So we've got one great example where we had a service desk analyst who was absolutely killing it at what they do, and then, expressed an interest in moving into application development and to be a ServiceNow engineer.
And what we did for her was set up a secondment exercise for, a day a week and that gradually increased and now, this employee of ours, who's an absolute superstar, is now a ServiceNow Engineer.
So if you're looking to really approach a career in ServiceNow, really understand what you're passionate about first.
And then really have a look at the different avenues you have to find an employer or a pathway for yourself.
It may not always be direct. But if you keep your eyes on the prize and continue to learn and foster your knowledge about the platform, that will serve you well.
In terms of different resources you have at your disposal to really understand the product.
So you're fresh into the IT industry and you don't really know a lot about ServiceNow, there are so many different resources that you can essentially access to upskill yourself.
The ServiceNow doc site is a really great resource, which really provides detailed information about every single capability on the platform.
You also have the ServiceNow ‘Now Learning’ platform, which is where you can actually access on demand training to upskill and certify in certain areas.
And there are also so many different forums and thought leadership pieces that exist, whether it be on LinkedIn or particular forums through the ServiceNow community that you can access as well.
To understand the different challenges that organisations are tackling, what they've solved, what's worked in one place, may have worked in other places as well.
So there's so many resources that you've got at your disposal to really acquire knowledge.
And I think that's a really strong approach and really solid approach to really enable you to start knocking on doors. to essentially hopefully get your first gig pertaining to the ServiceNow platform.
And within organisation that is looking to continue to grow and mature what they do. And with that comes the entry level resources, but also it comes with the resources that are looking to move from platform to platform as well.
So hopefully, you found this useful and we're always open to providing any advice to new starters into their ServiceNow career.
We've been hiring graduates for the last couple of years into our ServiceNow practice team.
It's been a really great exercise, bringing in new professionals into a new career within the ServiceNow practice.
And it's something that I think we're going to see a lot more of as the ServiceNow platform continues to grow and be adopted more across the global economy."
